What to expect
A small home should come with clear answers.
Red Door is deliberately personal, but the policies should never feel mysterious. Here is what owners can expect before, during and after a stay.
Where will my dog sleep?
Wherever they are most comfortable. Some dogs choose the cool floor by the door, some prefer a darker hallway, the big couch, a dog bed or even the human bed. If your dog requires a crate for sleeping, you are welcome to provide one.
Will I receive updates during the stay?
Yes. Daily photo updates and a short personal note are included with every Red Door stay. They are part of the service, not a paid upgrade.
How long are dogs left alone?
I am home most of the day. Most outings are only an hour or two, with occasional absences of up to about four hours.
How much exercise will my dog get?
The normal routine includes two walks each day, along with backyard time, supervised play and indoor interaction. Some high-energy dogs may also get an individual run when it is appropriate for that dog and the day.
Are vaccinations required?
Dogs should be current on age-appropriate vaccinations. Puppies who are still completing their vaccination series may be considered individually.
Do you accept intact dogs?
Intact dogs may be accepted on a case-by-case basis depending on the dogs already in care and the overall group mix. Females in an active heat cycle are not accepted for shared-home boarding.
Can you give medication?
Yes. I have experience administering pills, drops and injections. Please provide clear written instructions and the medication in its original container whenever possible.
What should I bring?
Bring your dog's regular food, leash or harness, medication and anything else they need to feel comfortable. Beds, blankets and treats are welcome. A crate is only necessary if your dog requires one for sleeping.
What dogs are a good fit for Red Door?
Dogs need to be comfortable sharing space with other dogs and should be house-trained or reliably pad-trained. Every request is considered individually. Aggression, serious resource guarding, escape behaviour, severe separation distress or other safety concerns may mean Red Door is not the right environment for a particular dog.
What happens at the meet-and-greet?
For a new client, the meet-and-greet is a short, low-pressure introduction before the first stay is approved. It gives me a chance to meet your dog, observe how they settle and interact, and make sure the home environment is a comfortable fit.
When is my reservation confirmed?
Submitting the form is a request, not an instant booking. Once the stay is approved, Square sends one invoice. The reservation becomes confirmed when the 50% reservation deposit is paid. The remaining 50% is due at drop-off.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellations made 14 or more days before drop-off receive a refund of the reservation deposit. Cancellations made less than 14 days before drop-off forfeit the 50% deposit. Holiday bookings require at least 21 days' notice for a deposit refund. Once a stay has begun, shortened stays and early pickups are non-refundable. Reductions to booked dates are treated under the same cancellation rules.
How do holiday rates work?
Holiday pricing applies to the surrounding holiday period rather than only the statutory date. Monday long weekends use holiday pricing for Friday through Sunday; Friday holidays use Thursday through Sunday. Special Christmas and New Year's week rules also apply when those holidays fall midweek. Easter, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's are holiday-rate periods.
Can Red Door pick up or return my dog?
Transportation may be available by request. You can ask for pickup, return home or both when submitting your stay request. The fee is set after the distance, timing and boarding schedule are reviewed rather than being automatically charged at a flat rate.
What happens if my dog needs a vet while I am away?
Before a first stay, Red Door collects your regular veterinarian, an emergency contact and a veterinary-care authorization. If something urgent happens and you cannot be reached, that authorization allows me to seek necessary care for your dog while continuing to make reasonable efforts to contact you.
Will my dog appear in Red Door photos or social media?
Dogs may appear in Red Door photography or social posts, but owners can opt out. Opting out does not affect the private daily photo updates you receive during the stay.
